News from the Alpine Garden
7th – 13th June 2017
Last winter brought less snow than usual to the Alpine Garden and the vegetation is further advanced than normal. The Wulfenia hill in front of the Gardeners house is covered with buds which should open in the next few days. Meanwhile, Adonis pyrenaica growing nearby is in full flower. Even the first Meconopsis species are opening their buds (more news on Meconopsis next week). For those interested in the indigenous flora the meadows are colourful with a large variety of flowers, for example Gentiana clusii and Gentiana acaulis as well as the dainty pink-flowered Primula farinosa. Watch out for the dainty hanging flowers of Clematis alpina, a particularly good specimen is at the foot of a Pinus cembra (Swiss stone pine) five minutes from the Alpine Garden. Once you have reached the Schachen come into the Alpine Garden and rest on a bench surrounded by flowers from all over the world.
