Epipremnum pinnatum: Mature leaf forms
This liana from Southeast Asia, Epipremnum pinnatum, is a popular houseplant.
It’s also known as the Devil’s Ivy, though it’s not related to the ivies
and is a member of the aroids. In our homes, where it usually isn’t exposed to strong
sunlight, it develops entire, heart-shaped leaves. If its long shoots reach areas of
direct sunlight, its leaves grow much larger and change shape. The leaves of the mature
plant are lobate and pierced with little windows like the split-leaf philodendron,
Monstera deliciosa, another popular houseplant.
Many plants have mature leaves that look very different from those they grew as young
plants. The scientific term for this is heterophyllia.
